Jinack Island is part of Nuimi National Park which covers a huge area of the North Bank of the Gambia and joins together with the Sine-Saloum Park of Senegal. It is in fact a sand spit which runs parallel to the coast and becomes detached at high water. On one side of the island it boasts the finest beach in The Gambia and beautiful, relatively safe swimming. By total contrast on the other side you find a maze of mangrove creeks.

The lodge is located on the western seafront and comprises 8 basic huts sleeping 2 persons per hut. It is staffed entirely by local villagers and to maintain the island's unspoilt nature there is a policy of having a maximum of 10 guests at any one time. The area is very rich in birds and wildlife: Among the mammals you might find in the area are hyena, red colobus & callithrix monkey, kob, duiker, genet, civet and various mongoose species, clawless otter, manatee and dolphins. Green turtle and crocodiles are also present, along with a wide range of other reptiles.

You can include an overnight stay (or longer) at Jinack whilst on the coastal part of your Discover the River trip. Due to the camp's remote location, accommodation is on a full board basis (£19 pppn supplement) and includes a delicious dinner, full bar service and a generous breakfast. The supplement for transport to / from Jinack is £55 pp. We generally recommend you travel to Jinack on your way back from up-country (i.e. Bird Safari Camp / Chimp Project) as you will already be on the north bank. Due to the sandy roads, you'll need to transfer to a 4 x 4 vehicle once you reach Barra. Returning to the main coastal areas involves a one hour journey by boat to Banjul (sea conditions permitting) from where you'll drive to your accommodation. If the sea is too choppy you will cross by ferry and return by road.

  • Located in the Niumi National Park - plenty of birds and other wildlife
  • 8 simply furnished rooms (with comfortable beds and a separate WC & shower block)
  • Lighting is provided by kerosene lamps
  • 11 km of deserted beach
  • Watch the sunset over the sea
  • Supplement: £19 pppn (full-board basis) + £55 pp for additional boat & vehicle transport
  • No single supplements per night, however, the transport supplement for single travellers is £85
